Buy-Sell-Transfer

There are two methods for selling/buying reptiles in WA. The simplest is the use of a herpetofauna dealer. The second is to use Fauna transfer authority form available from DPaW. Unlike a dealer which can do the transfer instantly with next to no notice. The transfer authority takes 5 working days to process. Dealer fees are usually $25 and the FTA costs $10.

There are many private dealers as well as a few pet stores such as some Pet Magic and Pet City stores. A list of dealers is obtainable from DPaW.

A link for a FTA form is available under the licensing menu.

Some examples are:

Buying/Transferring from a dealer. The dealer automatically does the transfer as part of the sale. You will get the dealer’s information to put on your return sheet. Remember to record the exact date, the dealers, name, location and license number.

Buying from a private keeper. The seller and you will have to visit a dealer or fill in a FTA. If visiting a dealer the seller transfers the animal to the dealer. The dealer then transfers the animal to you. All animals go onto the dealers books. When you send in your annual returns they must match the details that the dealer sends in to DPaW. Most dealers charge a fee for the transfers, which should really be no more than $25-50.

Selling to a private keeper. The buyer and you will have to visit a dealer or fill in a FTA. If using a dealer you transfer the animal to the dealer. The dealer then transfers the animal to the buyer. All animals go onto the dealers books. When you send in your annual returns they must match the details that the dealer sends in to DPaW. Most dealers charge a fee for the transfers, which should really be no more than $25-50.

Getting a free animal. This is the same as buying/selling from a private keeper. You still need to do a transfer through a licensed dealer or fill in a FTA and wait the 5 days.
