Heat Cord

Possibly the most versatile piece of equipment in the reptile hobby is the humble heat cord.

Similar to that which is found in an electric blanket, the heat cord is a flexible cord that heats up when plugged in. They come in various lengths and wattage’s and most often the length is determined by the wattage.

Always run and test the set up for a couple of days before introducing the heating method to a live animal. Testing would include monitoring the max and min temps with a digital probe thermometer. Sometimes the lower wattage cords such as 15w don’t produce enough heat for the desired use. But with a bit of testing and trial and error you quickly become familiar with their capabilities.

There are quite a few different brands and makes of heat cord. I prefer the grey cords that are round as shown bellow.

There isn’t much information on how to use heat cords out there so I will give a few examples of how it can be used.

The best thermostat to use with heat cord is the ‘Pulse Proportional’ thermostat. It’s far more precise and excellent for incubators that are using heat cord. However an on/off or dimming thermostat will also work with it.
